Kela Reimbursement for Treatment Abroad
Finnish patients may, in certain cases, be eligible to receive reimbursement from Kela for treatment provided outside Finland. This means that a patient can choose to undergo treatment in another EU country, including at Aurora Clinic in Estonia. The patient pays for the treatment upfront and can later apply to Kela for reimbursement.
To qualify for reimbursement, the following conditions must be met:
- The patient has been waiting for the necessary surgery in Finland for more than six months.
- The treatment provided abroad is equivalent to the treatment available in Finland and would be considered medically justified there.
Please note that Kela reimbursement is limited to the amount that the same treatment would cost in the patient’s region of residence in Finland. Kela does not cover any additional expenses that exceed the standard Finnish price level.
To apply for reimbursement from Kela, appropriate documentation is needed, including:
- A doctor’s referral or medical justification for the treatment
- Medical records and a description of the treatment provided
- Invoices and proof of payment
Aurora Clinic supports patients in preparing the necessary documentation to ensure that the reimbursement application process is as clear and smooth as possible.
We recommend that all patients review Kela’s terms and conditions before starting treatment and, if needed, consult Kela directly.
If you have any questions about Kela reimbursement or treatment options, please feel free to contact us.
